Alternatives 1E and 2E
In June 2008, NYSDOT announced it was evaluating two alternatives for the Bruckner-Sheridan Interchange: 1E, which takes down the Sheridan, and 2E, which keeps it. It also revealed a new plan for direct access into Hunts Point: the Oak Point freight yard ramps.
These ramps will allow traffic going in and out of Hunts Point, East or Westbound, to directly access the peninsula from the Bruckner Expressway. These ramps are featured in both alternatives. Now, trucks coming from the Triboro Bridge and the George Washington Bridge will be able to use the Bruckner to get to Hunts Point. This means less trucks on local streets!
It also means that there will truly be little use for the Sheridan Expressway. Trucks from the George Washington Bridge used the Sheridan to get to local streets going South to Hunts Point, but with the new Oak Point ramps they won't have to use the Sheridan (or go on local streets) anymore. (View map) Alternative 1E not only provides direct access into Hunts Point and gets trucks off local streets, but it also opens up 28 acres of land for affordable housing, businesses, and open space for the South Bronx as envisioned in the Community Plan for the Sheridan.
These ramps are a better version of SBRWA's original plans for ramps at Leggett Ave., so the SBRWA fully supports Plan 1E since it will benefit the trucks coming in and out of the Bronx and the people who live there, too.
